Alcohol is quite simply a type of drug. It affects the nerves that pass messages around the body by slowing them down. And the more you drink the greater the effect. The reason people often get more lively when they've had a drink is that alcohol affects parts of the brain responsible for self-control.

Drinking a lot may make you feel incredibly attractive - unfortunately, it has just the opposite effect. Here are some of the physical changes heavy drinkers can look forward to:

Weight gain
Dry skin
Broken veins
Bloodshot eyes
Bad Smell

It's the law:

Under 18s are not allowed to buy alcohol from an off licence or bar area of a pub
Adults are not allowed to buy alcohol on behalf of under 18s
Police have powers to confiscate alcohol from under 18s drinking in public spaces (e.g. in the street or in parks)
It's illegal for children under five to drink alcohol

How does drinking affect an unborn baby?

Heavy drinking during pregnancy can affect the development of the foetus. In the first three months, heavy drinking can damage the developing organs and nervous system. After this, it can have the additional effect of stopping the baby from growing and developing properly.

Many have died drinking alcohol.

Make sure your not one of them.

If you're depressed and you drink too much - even occasionally - you're at much greater risk of self-harm and Bobba.

Heavy drinking can also aggravate symptoms in people with depression and anxiety. Drinking may bring you short term relief from anxiety and stress, but in the long term it can make you feel worse, especially if you drink a lot.

f you take your sport seriously, you need to wise up on the effects of alcohol.

Alcohol and sport are not good mixers. Alcohol slows down reaction times, increases body heat loss and reduces endurance. If you have consumed alcohol 24 hours before exercising you're more likely to develop muscle cramps.

Endurance
Reaction times
Sport injuries
Muscle cramps
Body heat loss

Delayed diabetes may occur up to 16 hours after heavy drinking. So if you overdo it, keep your blood glucose levels topped up with carbohydrate. After drinking, make sure you have carbohydrate before you go to bed and at breakfast, and monitor your blood glucose levels closely.

When you drink, follow these useful tips:

*If you drink alcohol, make sure it's ALWAYS shortly before, during or after a meal

*Never drink on an empty stomach.

*Alcohol gives you calories! Watch out!

I thought it was illegal for under 16's..
My RE teacher told me it's only illegal for underage people to buy alcohol. You can drink underage and not break the law.

He may be wrong, because that seems ridiculous in my opinion.
