Italy have been knocked out at the Group stage on two occasions. The first time was in 1996 and the second time was in 2004.

Italy got off to a terrible start in their qualification drawing 1-1 at home to Lithuania and then losing 3-1 in Paris. A string of 9 wins and a draw (against France) saw them win the Group by 3 points.

Group C features two pairs of teams who both know each other very well from qualifying. Romania and Netherlands both qualified from the same Group as did Italy and France!
