It's not compulsory in my school but the language teachers more or less say that if you don't do a language you're screwed for life - they blackmail you into taking it so the shortage of people taking languages is not a problem
I stupidly took french I don't know what came over me
i got a letter home saying how amazing i was at french so my parents made me take it turned out most of the people in my year got that letter too

they're sneaky, those ones along with the history teachers who give you that patronizing smile every time you come near as if to say "pick me or else I'll burn your house down"
We have to do French up until we do GCSEs and we have to pick at least one language for GCSE (French, Spanish or German). I don't mind learning other languages but I wish we learnt Finnish or Chinese or something interesting.
It really shouldn't be. Because some people just don't feel the need to learn French, or German, or Spanish, or Hungarian, or whatever, but they're forced to anyway. In my old secondary school foreign languages was manditory for years 7, 8 and 9, with both German and French included. And when it came to my year's GCSE years, they had very, very few people take it, and most of them failed. So it is just a hassle, and for no real reason at all, much like PE
