Compulsory language study
03-Jul-2009 (23:49)
Do you think studying another language should be compulsory in schools? In my school, it was compulsory up until year 11, after year 11 you could choose to carry it on or to stop taking it. But, is it actually worth being a compulsory subject, or should it be by choice?

A survey showed that most brits that go on holiday dont bother learning the language and with most tourist locations speaking english, people argue it's not a necessary subject like English and maths.

It already is in my school, you have to do a short course in Welsh even if you don't pick it as a GCSE I think its a terrible idea not many people want to know a second language

What's the point in just knowing one language? It's nice just to have a variety rather than just to stick with english.

We had the option at year 9, it is not compulsory atm to take for GCSE
I think it should be compulsory really because a language is such a good skill and we don't do enough to teach people other languages we just expect them to learn ours

When I went on an exchange to Spain, all of the students spoke some English, and many of them were totally fluent in English, and their ages ranged from 14 plus
It just showed me how their school system placed a higher importance on learning languages, even though I studied Spanish for over 6 years, i'm no were near fluent and can only speak basic sentences

urgh yeah
welsh = worst language ever

french for me was compulsory year 7-9
welsh compulsory year 1-11
german was a matter of choice
well, if you were good at french, welsh and english in year 7 you got the choice to do german but if you said no/didn't get offered you would never get the opportunity again.
hardly any people got offered too

Yes, learning another language is beautiful.

Especially when it's the best language in the world.
